The Department of Drama and Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University is a pioneering platform of Bangladesh with a clear vision of promoting and experimenting indigenous theatre of Bangladesh. The Department not only offers undergraduate, graduate, M.Phil., and PhD degrees in the field, but it also focuses on global theatre and performance research and experimentation. In order to prepare students for the dynamic world of performing arts, we place a strong emphasis on in-depth study of global theatre history and theories in addition to practical activities. Our curriculum seeks to establish this field as a unique symbol of cultural evolution and development. For both undergraduate and graduate students, theory, methodology, laboratory courses, and fieldwork are essential parts of the program. In the M.A. phase, currently our Department offers a Master’s degree in five specialized disciplines, in two groups: thesis and non-thesis. Many researchers in this Department have completed and are pursuing M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees through advanced study on drama and theatre, as well as various topics relating to media and art forms such as mass media, film, music, and dance.

The Department's goal is for every graduate to become an informed practitioner who has a strong appreciation for the indigenous aesthetics of our country and culture. We exercise an intimate and interactive teaching-learning relation with a view of understanding the true essence of this unique art. "Theatre Studies" is our acclaimed research journal which is published yearly to explore our research findings on Bangla Theatre with a comparative perspective to world theatre studies. We welcome all the good of the world to grasp the life of humans through artistic communication of theatre art.

I would like to recall the words of the eminent playwright and the founder of this Department, Natyacharya Selim Al Deen about the curriculum and educational philosophy of this Department. He said: “This Department's curriculum reflects a deep philosophical and creative outlook. This curriculum is not merely a prescription for treatment but a part of a life imbued with light and joy, contemplation and labor”.
