PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Nishat Parvez is an Associate Professor in the Department of Journalism and Media Studies at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh. Before joining Jahangirnagar University, she served as a Lecturer in Journalism and Media Studies at Stamford University Bangladesh.

Nishat began her professional career as a sports journalist at Boishakhi Television. She later joined Channel i, one of Bangladesh’s leading media organizations, where she worked as a newsroom editor for five years. Her professional and research experience also includes work with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi, Red Orange Communications in Dhaka, Bangladesh Nari Progoti Sangha, and the University of Bergen in Norway. She has published research in national and international academic journals.

Nishat has received several international fellowships, including the U.S. Department of State’s Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) Fellowship in 2014, the Fojo Media Institute’s International Training Programme (ITP) Media Asia Fellowship in 2021–2022, and a fellowship from The Asia Foundation.

She is currently a doctoral candidate in Communication and Journalism at the University of Oregon in the United States. She earned an MA in Media Practice for Development and Social Change from the University of Sussex, United Kingdom, as a Commonwealth Scholar in 2019. Her master’s dissertation, titled “Bangladeshi Media in a ‘Democratic’ System,” examined the relationship between media and democracy in Bangladesh. She previously completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Dhaka.
