Dr. Md. Sohel Rana Professor, Department of Pharmacy
PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Dr. Md. Sohel Rana, currently Professor (Grade-I) in the Department of Pharmacy at Jahangirnagar University, took his birth on 05 August 1968 in the district of Kushtia, Bangladesh. He started schooling at Kamalapur High School and did his Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations in 1984 from Jessore board securing ~78% marks. Thereafter he got admitted into Kushtia Government College and passed the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinations in 1986 from the same board securing ~80% marks. After completing his college education, he took admission in the Department of Pharmacy, Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh and earned his B. Pharm (Honours) and M. Pharm degree in 1989 and 1990 respectively securing 1st class 1st position in both the examinations. Dr. Rana in the progression of his studies obtained several merit scholarships. He joined Department of Pharmacy as a Lecturer in June 1994 and was promoted to the position of Professor in April 2007. Meanwhile he was awarded the Monbusho Scholarship for Ph.D Program in 1998 and obtained his degree from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Okayama University, Japan in 2002. He was named as the International Young Scientist of the year 2007 by International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, UK and biography enlisted in the Marquis Who's Who in Asia, 2007. As a professor, he is engaged in teaching and research in Natural Products Chemistry and Drug Delivery Systems. He has published more than 237 research articles in national and international journals. He supervised 12 Ph.D, 1 M.Phil and more than 130 M.Pharm research students in the area of pharmaceutical sciences. He is doing on the Editorial Board of a number of reputed journals. He also served as the Chairman of the Department from June 2003 to June 2006.
Besides his teaching and research responsibilities, Dr. Rana has involvement in some administrative duties. He is registered with the Pharmacy Council of Bangladesh and acting as Joint Secretary of the Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society. He has been elected as Senate Member of Jahangirnagar University for consecutive four times (2003, 2010, 2016 and 2024) and is a member of Jahangirnagar University Teachers Association (elected as Member of JUTA Executive Committee in 2010, 2017 and Secretary in 2018). He has successfully served as a House Tutors of Shaheed Salam Barkot Hall (1994-1997), A.F.M. Kamaluddin Hall (2002-2005) and as a Provost of Mir Mosharof Hossain Hall (2006-2009). Currently he is acting as General Secretary of Jahangirnagar University Co-operative Housing Society (Arunapalli, the largest University Teachers Housing Society in Bangladesh) and received government Best Housing Complex Award in 2022 and 2023 under his leadership.
